It is estimated that 96,000 tonnes of plastic waste is produce annually in Sierra Leone, and 84% is mismanaged.
Operation 232, is a nonprofit impact-driven waste management and education social enterprise based in Freetown, Sierra Leone, aims to address plastic pollution, promote climate action, and empower communities and women through environmental initiatives, projects, and awareness campaigns. By recycling 800,000 tonnes of discarded plastic by 2040, Operation 232 wants to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action).
Reducing Plastics For Humanity

Plastic pollution is a major challenge facing underdeveloped and developing countries in Africa due to a lack of appropriate waste management. As a result, during rainy seasons, discarded plastic debris is transported by rain water into waterways, rivers, and drainage systems. For instance, the capital city of Sierra Leone, Freetown, is struggling with the growing inflow of plastic. Waste management is at a very basic level or non-existent: Around 80% of the 40,600 tons/year of plastic waste is currently being dumped on streets and rivers, where it flows down to coastal communities and into the ocean.
Why The Need?
Freetown faces severe plastic pollution, with 84% of 96,000 tons of plastic waste mismanaged annually due to the lack of continuous education and resource supply for waste management and clean-up initiatives. This results in mass accumulation of plastics and other harmful materials in the society (rural-urban cities)
